Everything I have seen about this procedure has been hearsay. I would love to see the actual journal reports on this procedure. We were not able to read the actual Chinese on all of the links that were provided (at least I was not able). Until I see actual published in medical journal proof...the jury is out for me.
I actually used to work in clinical medical research. For any drug, procedure, device there are always going to be people who have complications and there are risks. Then there are going to be some people who do well or have improvement. That is why it is so important to study these things systematically. Initial trials start with very small numbers of patients, and over time if the drug, technique or device shows promise, more people are added to the trial. Plus the trials are VERY closely regulated by intense monitoring throughout the duration of the trial (at least here in the US). When I was in clinical research, monitors would come by my office quite frequently to check my data in order to ensure that it was accurate and that I was reporting any adverse effects in a correct and timely manner, and to make sure that I was also accurately reporting the positive effects as well.
The article that was quoted in the "Bad News about the Xiao Procedure" post (http://www.spinabifidaconnection.com...ead.php?t=1463) seems to be (at least in my opinion) somewhat biased. Supposedly over 1500 people have been treated with this procedure, yet only 150 were mentioned in the article. Where are the other 90%? I want to see the hard, concrete study results (such as urodynamics, kidney scans...actual unbiased DATA) that had been regulated and reported before I make any opinion about the merits or demerits of the Xiao procedure.
