Usually, unless for programmers who write domain applications, users don't need to program in say fortran, C, or C++, etc. There are to many details in those languages for users to care about and distract them from the actually problem they are working on. MATLAB for example should have been good enough to do your work, and a whole lot easier to program with. It is not about not knowing what is going on in particular field, it is about using the right application software to do the job rather than reinventing the wheel and write something from scratch.
