interrupt the homing path by spinning the plate the beetles pass through, the better can always find the right direction, regardless of sun (say at night), so it got to be the star.
Milky way is the most obvious one in the sky, I think either they guessed it or by removing stars from fake sky to pin point the one the guides the beetle.
